The trick is to export the heightmap from QGIS to png, really high resolution (I use 720dpi).
This has the whole of the Great Britain in Geopackage format. Used a geographic projection (ESPG:27700) with a 1:1 x/y cell ratio for simplicity.ĭata is from Ordnance Survey Open Data ( Open ZoomStack). This time i was able to get the Blender render back into QGIS 3.6 for cartography (labels, grids) and page layout.
I've used Blender with QGIS many times before, but it's always been a one-way process before now.

It can be seen in the right hand corner of the image. The Sphere has the cartouche of the pharaoh Ptolemy on the front, further down the script the cartouche is repeated, but misspelt. The Rosetta Stone enabled Champollion and others to finally make progress deciphering hieroglyphics. The first 26 or so lines are missing from the hieroglyphic part. It is a stela (or stele, a stone with writing carved on it) with the same message (a decree from Ptolemy V) repeated three times, in hieroglyphics (Late Egyptian), in Demotic (another version of Egyptian), and in Greek. It was captured by the British while still in Egypt, and is now in the British Museum. It was a damaged stone (much of the top is missing), found by Napoleon's invading army, at Rosetta (apparently French for Rashid) in northern Egypt, in 1799. The Rosetta Stone was the original key to the decipherment of hieroglyphics. Managed to find a transcript of the Rosetta stone, and used it as a heightmap over a sphere and a plane, added a Menger hypercube, texture and lights, et voila! A development on the Egyptian fractal theme.
